How do I know if my skin is combination or oily?

You think you have oily skin but your cheeks become dry in winter? You may have combination skin.

  • Oily skin is a type of skin that produces more sebum than necessary. This hypersecretion of sebum manifests itself by visible pores, a dull complexion and a shiny face when it is hot or after physical effort.
  • Combination skin has the characteristics of oily skin in the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin). Around this T-zone (on the cheeks and temples), it behaves like dry skin.

To determine your skin type, place a tissue against your face for a few seconds. Then observe the condition of the tissue: if there are no oil spots, your skin is normal or dry. If there are oil spots in the T-zone, your skin is combination. Finally, if you see oil on the entire handkerchief, you have oily skin. In order not to falsify the results, make sure to perform this test on your skin naturally, without makeup.

Taking care of combination skin

Combination skin has two faces: dry skin and oily skin. Here's how to take care of your combination skin with an adapted routine.

Why do I have combination skin?

Skin type is a genetic attribute: if you have combination skin, there is nothing you can do about it. However, it is entirely possible to treat the imperfections that often accompany combination skin, such as acne in the T-zone or irritation on the cheeks.

A skin with multiple needs

Combination skin can be tricky to manage: moisturizing is necessary to treat the dry area, but can accentuate excess oil in the T-zone. Similarly, regular exfoliation is necessary to treat the oilier part of the skin, but can irritate the cheeks. Combination skin needs purifying treatments that gently exfoliate while deeply hydrating the skin.

How to take care of combination skin?

Skin care products dedicated to oily skin are generally too harsh for combination skin, which is sensitive to irritation. This is why Klorane has created its range for combination to oily skin, with products that gently treat excess sebum and moisturize dry areas.

The routine for combination skin

The ideal routine for combination skin involves 3 key steps:

  • Cleanse, exfoliate and purify the skin with a detoxifying treatment such as our 3 in 1 purifying powder with organic water mint;
  • Deeply moisturize the skin with a hyaluronic acid treatment such as the Klorane serum with organic cornflower;
  • Matify and protect the skin with a sebum-reducing treatment such as our Organic Water Mint purity cream.

Taking care of oily skin

Most teenagers have oily skin: this is due to hormones and changes in their body. However, for some, excess oil persists into adulthood. Here's how to purify oily skin and control excess oil for clear, glowing skin.

Why do I have oily skin?

Like combination skin, oily skin is genetic. However, several environmental factors can accentuate sebum hypersecretion, such as stress, diet, hormonal changes or the use of unsuitable cosmetic products. Pollution is also an important factor: pollutant particles adhere to the skin's oil, which prevents it from breathing and causes it to produce even more sebum. This vicious circle makes the skin shiny and prone to imperfections.

The needs of oily skin

Oily skin has three main needs: to detoxify the pores from impurities accumulated during the day, to regulate the production of sebum and to protect the skin from pollution and external aggressions.

Should I moisturize my skin if it already produces too much sebum?

The idea that oily skin doesn't need moisturizing is a myth: in fact, dehydrated skin produces even more sebum to compensate for the lack of water. People with oily skin tend to use a lot of harsh products, such as exfoliants and other mattifying agents that dry out the skin. To properly care for oily skin, you need to combine an oil-regulating treatment with regular moisturizing.

The routine for oily skin

The ideal routine for oily skin includes 3 main steps:

  • Purify the skin in depth with an exfoliating care like our 3 in 1 purifying powder with organic water mint;
  • Smooth the skin with a decongesting treatment like our organic cornflower eye patches;
  • Moisturize and protect with a sebum-reducing anti-pollution cream such as our organic water mint purity cream;
