What does it look like?
Chinese peony, Paeonia lactiflora, is a perennial herbaceous tuberous root plant of the Paeoniaceae family native to central and eastern Asia.
There are two types of peonies: shrubs with a woody trunk that can measure up to 2 meters and herbaceous peonies which, each year, offer us the spectacle of their flowering. They have a variety of sizes, shapes, colors...
Most herbaceous peonies grown in gardens are hybrids from Paeonia lactiflora. In May-June, slightly perfumed flowers appear, solitary, cut or in a bowl. A peony can be capricious: its flowering may take 2 to 5 years, but once it is there, it will bloom even more beautifully.
THE VIRTUES OF OUR PEONIES
Why is it so good for you ?
Whether to soothe irritations or to find a feeling of comfort on a daily basis, peony is the best ally for sensitive skin.
Rich in antioxidants, the peony has a calming effect: that’s why you will find it in shampoos, conditioners and serums for irritated scalps as well as in masks and creams designed for delicate skin. By opting for peony extract treatments, you can say goodbye to tightness, itching and other unpleasant sensations.
The peony and the hair
Why does peony act on your irritated scalp?
While heredity plays a major role in skin sensitivity, lifestyle (stress, diet, alcohol, tobacco, unsuitable cosmetics) and the environment (UV, cold, heat, wind, pollution) also play a significant role in skin awareness. Peony is the magic potion for sensitive skin.
That is why Klorane has chosen the peony Paeonia lactiflora traditionally used in Chinese medicine for its soothing properties on body and mind. Its culture is also traditional: no irrigation or pesticides but a lot of patience because 5 years are necessary before the harvest! Once harvested, the roots are washed, scalded and peeled before being dried. The extract is then produced in Gaillac, France, with natural solvents thanks to a patented Pierre Fabre extraction method, so that it retains all its benefits.
The peony and the skin
The skin of the face is very thin and therefore particularly delicate. It tends to react more easily to external aggressions such as chemicals, pollution or the sun. In some people, this reactivity is very pronounced: we then speak of sensitive skin. Normal, dry, mixed: all skin types can be considered sensitive! Indeed, sensitivity is a skin condition, temporary or permanent, which is added to the nature of the skin. In sensitive skin, the cutaneous barrier is alternated and no longer plays its protective role. Thus during external aggressions, the skin will react with reactions resulting in sensations of discomfort, tightness ...
Peony is the ideal active ingredient to soothe sensitive facial skin on a daily basis. Thanks to its anti-irritant properties, it helps to find a lasting feeling of comfort. It is paeoniflorin, a molecule present in peony extract, which gives the flower all its benefits for the skin: its antioxidant and calming action helps to prevent irritation and soothe uncomfortable sensations.
By applying a day cream to the peony, you protect your face throughout the day. You can also opt for a makeup remover enriched with peony extract if your skin does not support classic makeup removers. Not to mention the rich or light peony creams that slip into your bag for immediate soothing in case of sensations of tightness.
A WORD FROM THE EXPERT
The peony used in Klorane's care is a cultivated peony, so its use does not endanger wild peonies: good news 100% natural!
ALEXANDRE PANEL
Klorane Botanist
Societal and environmental commitment
The peony is one of the plant species on the brink of extinction. Klorane Botanical Foundation has partnered with the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Beijing to save these endangered wild peony species.
The objective of this scientific program using plant biotechnologies and in vitro culture is to develop a method that will allow the multiplication of wild peonies to consider a reintroduction of plants into the wild eventually.
Did you know ?
“Paeonia lactiflora was introduced into France during the First Empire, when the Emperor of China offered a collection to the Empress Josephine. Over time, the beautiful woman gives rise to a veritable 'Pivoinomania' that culminates in the 19th century among painters and collectors.
