Medicinal Cornflower

Recognized for its soothing virtues

All about our Cornflowers

Centaurea cyanus, known as cornflower, is listed in the European Pharmacopoeia for its soothing and decongestant properties. We grow and harvest cornflower on our own land, in the southwest of France, according to the principles of organic farming and with respect for the ecosystem. This allows us to minimize our ecological footprint, to benefit from optimal traceability and perfect control of the quality of our products!

What does it look like?

It comes in the form of long, frail stems with tapered leaves that bear wonderful double flowers ranging from blue to pink through purple.

It is also called 'cornflower of the fields' because it is often found without having been planted in the winter cereal fields.

To save this endangered flower, action programs have been implemented in regions of France including the Tarn, cradle of Klorane.

Cornflower is listed in the European pharmacopoeia for its soothing benefits. Traditionally, it is called a spectacle breaker for its decongestant properties and therefore its action against dark circles.

THE VIRTUES OF OUR CORNFLOWER

Why is it so good for your skin ?

Mr. Pierre Fabre was interested in these properties for cosmetic use, and our botanical experts selected the Blue Boy variety, which meets the requirements of productivity and the richness of the active ingredient for the finished product: it is this variety that is used in the products and care of Laboratoires Klorane. Moreover, the cultivation of cornflower in organic farming preserves its soothing and decongestant properties. We harvest its flowers with delicacy in full bloom, when they are gorged with active molecules.

Our factory in Gaillac, located a few meters from the Cornflower plots, uses infusion and distillation processes that optimize the properties of molecules already present in the plant, while having as little impact on the environment as possible. The solvent used is incredibly green: it’s water! This organic floral water, extracted on site, is the flagship ingredient of our moisturizing and detoxifying skin care.

A WORD FROM THE EXPERT

Since 1967, we have been using the Cornflower, a plant as pretty as it is effective. The plant as a whole is cut, then picked up by hand, in order to obtain a safe floral water known for its soothing virtues…

Societal and environmental commitment

If the cutting is carried out only mechanically, the harvest is done manually by seasonal staff in social integration.

The extraction is carried out in Gaillac, 50 meters from the fields! The principle: produce a COSMOS certified organic cornflower distilled water. The organic distilled cornflower water is then shipped to our site in Soual, 48 kilometers away, for integration into the formula.

Did you know ?

Under its former name of barbel, the cornflower is at the origin of the decorative pattern 'with barbel' (sowing flowers) or 'barbels' (flower borders in a garland) very popular on porcelain or earthenware services, particularly at the factories of Sèvres or Tournai, and who had the favor of Queen Marie-Antoinette.
