What does it look like?
Native to Europe, calendula, commonly known as “marigold,” is a plant that grows and is easily cultivated throughout the Mediterranean basin.
It grows to between 5 and 50 cm in height and is recognizable by its yellow to orange flower heads.
The calendula flower has long, slender stems with tapered leaves that bear beautiful double flowers ranging in color from blue to pink to purple.
Already known and used in ancient times by the Arabs, Greeks, and Indians for its medicinal, secular, cosmetic, and dyeing properties, this pretty redhead took off in the Middle Ages and has continued to diversify ever since.
THE VIRTUES OF OUR CALENDULA
Why is it so good for babies?
At birth and during the first three years of life, babies' skin is immature and vulnerable because it is not yet fully functional: the skin barrier is thin and permeable to harmful factors such as pathogens and UV radiation. The epidermis has not yet synthesized the proteins and lipids that would strengthen its outer layer. During this relatively short phase, the skin barrier does not fully perform its protective role.
The softening and healing properties of calendula help to regenerate babies' sensitive and delicate skin and strengthen their natural defenses. Each calendula flower is harvested by hand in early summer to preserve the quality of the active ingredients and their benefits.

ALEXANDRE PANEL
Klorane Botanist
Societal commitment
Passing on a passion for botany to children: that is the aim of the Graine de Botaniste program.
It's never too early to learn about the wonders of nature. The Klorane Botanical Foundation launched the Graine de Botaniste program to share its passion for botany and raise awareness among children about protecting biodiversity from an early age. After all, what better way to inspire a desire to protect the natural world than by immersing children in the fascinating world of plants?
Societal commitment
Today, calendula is grown organically, harvested by hand, then extracted and manufactured using a green solvent, a natural active ingredient specifically formulated for babies.
Did you know ?
Nicknamed “the bride of the sun,” calendula gets its nickname from calendae, which means “first day of the month” in Latin, hence its meteorological significance, as the flower has the distinctive feature of opening at sunrise and closing at sunset (this is the phenomenon of “nyctinasty” discovered by the famous botanist Paul-Victor Fournier) .
